The AI chatbot running cost in India fell this month. Anthropic launched Claude Haiku 5.5 on 7 October 2026 at US$0.10 per million input tokens, about 75% below its previous small model. For a chatbot that handles 3,000 customer chats a month, the model fee in ourworked example below comes to roughly US$1.50. The AI model was never the main cost of a chatbot. The build, the connections to your systems and the testing are, and those did not get cheaper this month.
This post is for owners and founders who read the "AI is getting cheaper" headlines and want to know what a chatbot costs to run before they hire a developer. By the end you will know which costs fell, which did not, and what to ask for in a quote.
What happened to AI model prices this month?
Three launches in three weeks pushed prices down. A token is a small piece of text, roughly three-quarters of a word, and AI companies charge by the million tokens read (input) and written (output).
On 22 and 23 September 2026, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 and OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI says both GPT-6 models cost up to 50%less than their GPT-5.6 counterparts (Engadget, 22 Sep 2026; The Hans India, 23 Sep 2026).
On 7 October 2026, Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5, a small and fast model, atabout 75% less than Haiku 4.5. The report says its prices are in line with GPT-6 Luna (Yahoo Finance, 7 Oct 2026).
Here are the published prices, in US dollars per million tokens, as reported by those sources.
Model | Input | Output | Best suited for |
Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 | $0.50 | FAQs, simple support, data extraction |
GPT-6 Luna | $0.10 | $0.50 | High-volume, simple tasks |
GPT-6 Sol | $2 | $10 | Harder reasoning and coding |
Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 | Complex, multi-step work |
These are the companies' own list prices as reported by the press. Prices change often, so check the provider's pricing page before you put a number in a budget.
What is the AI chatbot running cost in India now?
At typical small-business volumes, the model fee is now small enough to ignore. Here is a worked example, so you can see the arithmetic.
Assume a chatbot answers 3,000 customer chats a month. Each chat sends the model about 3,000 tokens (the customer's question, the chat so far, and the pieces of your price list or policy the bot looks up) and gets back about 400 tokens. That is 9 million input tokens and 1.2 million output tokens a month. These are our assumptions for illustration, not measurements from a client.
Model | Input cost | Output cost | Monthly model fee |
Claude Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna | $0.90 | $0.60 | $1.50 |
GPT-6 Sol | $18 | $12 | $30 |
Claude Opus 5.5 | $36 | $24 | $60 |
Even at ten times the volume, a small model costs about US$15 a month. The large model costs about US$600. That gap is why choosing the right-sized model matters more than it did last year.

If the model is cheap, why is a chatbot still not free to run?
Because the model fee is only one line of the bill. The rest is unchanged by this month's news.
Build. Someone has to load your products, prices and policies into the bot, connect it to your order or booking system, and write the rules for when it hands over to a human. This is where most of the money goes.
Messaging fees. If the bot lives on WhatsApp, Meta charges separately for business conversations, and a provider may add its own charge. These change often, so we do not quote a figure here.
Hosting. The server or cloud service that runs the bot and stores chat history. Maintenance. Your prices, offers and policies change. The bot needs updating, and someone must read the chats it got wrong.
Foreign billing. Model providers bill in US dollars. Ask your accountant how GST and foreign-currency payments apply to your business.
A good quote separates these lines. If a developer quotes one lump sum and calls it "AIcost" , ask what is inside it.
What does the build cost, and where does an AI pilot fit?
Ureka's complete app systems run ₹2.5–10 lakh, and a mobile app from one codebase starts from ₹14,999. A chatbot build may fall inside that range or below it, depending on how many systems it connects to. Other Indian cost guides quote ₹2–25 lakh for apps, which is a third-party range and not ours. Our app development cost guide explains what moves a price within it.
For AI work, we start with a fixed-price pilot of about 4 weeks on your own data, with accuracy measured before you commit to the full build. That matters more now. With cheap models, the running cost is rarely the risk. The real question is whether the bot answers correctly on your questions. A pilot answers that with numbers. You can read how it works on our fixed-price AI pilot page.
Which AI model should an Indian business pick for a chatbot?
Start with the smallest model that answers your real questions correctly, and test it on your own chats. Do not pick by brand.
Small models like Haiku 5.5 and GPT-6 Luna are usually enough for price lists, opening hours, order status, appointment slots and basic document reading. Larger models earn their cost when the bot must reason over long contracts, handle messy multi-step requests, or write code.
A sensible setup uses both. The small model handles most simple chats, and the bot passes harder ones to a larger model. Whatever you choose, ask the developer to build it so the model can be swapped in a day. Prices and quality shift every few weeks, and you should not be locked to one provider. This is part of how we approach generative AI development for Indian businesses.
What are the risks of using the cheapest model?
Cheap does not mean correct. A small model can answer fluently and still be wrong, and a wrong answer about a refund or a price costs more than the model fee you saved.
Wrong answers. Test on at least 100 real questions from your own chats before launch, and keep a human handover for anything the bot is unsure about.
Customer data. Chats can contain names, phone numbers and addresses. Under India's DPDP Act you are responsible for that data. Ask where the data is sent and stored, and whether the provider keeps it.
Price and policy changes. A provider can change prices or retire a model. A swappable design protects you.
Overselling. AI is not the right tool for every job. If your chats are ten fixed questions, a simple menu bot on WhatsApp is cheaper and more reliable. We will tell you that on the first call.
What should you do this month?
1. Write down your 20 most common customer questions and how many times a month
each is asked.
2. Pull 100 real chats or emails as a test set.
3. Ask any developer for a quote with separate lines for build, messaging fees, hosting and maintenance.
4. Ask for a pilot on your own data with a measured accuracy figure before the full build.
5. Check that you will own the code, the data and the accounts. If the chatbot will live on WhatsApp, look at our WhatsApp chatbot and automation solutions before you decide.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to run an AI chatbot per month in India?
The model fee for a small business chatbot can be under US$2 a month at around 3,000 chats when it uses a small model, based on our worked example above. Total monthly cost also includes hosting, WhatsApp messaging fees and maintenance. These vary by setup, so ask any developer to price each line separately.
Did AI chatbots get cheaper to build in October 2026?
Running them did, because model prices fell. Building them did not change much. The build covers connecting the bot to your data and systems, testing it on real questions and setting up handover to a person. That is mostly developer time, and developer time did not get cheaper because a model price dropped.
Is a cheaper AI model good enough for customer support?
Often yes for simple questions such as prices, timings and order status. For sensitive cases such as refunds or disputes, test the model on real chats first and send hard cases to a person. Accuracy on your own questions matters more than the model's brand or its list price.
Should I wait for AI prices to fall further before building?
Waiting rarely pays off, because the model fee is a small part of the total bill. If the chatbot is built so the model can be swapped, you capture future price cuts without rebuilding. A better plan is to start with a small fixed-price pilot, measure accuracy, and scale only if the results are good.
Who owns the chatbot and my customer data?
With Ureka, you own the code, the data and the accounts from day one. Ask every developer this question before you sign, and get the answer in writing. Without ownership, you can end up paying a monthly fee for a bot you cannot move to another provider or change yourself.
